Playa del Carmen Reef Restoration Program by Oceanus, A.C.

LOCATION: Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

STATUS: ACTIVE

Our restoration sites are located in the zone of influence of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve in the reef area in front of:
* The Mayakobá hotel complex (3 sites)
* Punta Maroma (2 sites) and
* Cerebros

We started this project in 2015 with funding from Fairmont Mayakobá, these sites have remained active thanks to the support of the hotel itself, some time later Ciudad Mayakobá, Fundación SUMMIT and Fundación Sancus joined this effort, who are now an essential part of its development .

The hotels of the Mayakoba complex actively support this site through the creation of volunteer brigades from the hotel staff, as well as continuous training for the staff of aquatic activities as Certified Guides of the Program in order to promote the importance of the reefs and restoration actions between guests, staff and visitors.

To date we have 2 nurseries installed, we have started restoration sites in Punta Maroma and Cerebros and we have transplanted about 4,000 colonies. In this location, the highest percentage of survival in transplants (>90%) is presented, and the oldest colonies have reached sizes greater than 50 cm, thus reaching their reproductive potential.
