Cancun Reef Restoration Program by Oceanus, A.C.

LOCATION: PN Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc

SITES:

We started this project in 2019 with the aim of increasing the resilience potential of the reef sites of the National Park, destroyed by various impacts. In this 2020 we have 4 nurseries installed with more than 90% survival and 2,300 colonies planted. In the course of two years the coral cover increased up to 4 times of the original state, the new colonies show a rapid growth of more than 1cm per month.

This project was started thanks to:

  • The National Commission of Protected Areas (CONANP) and
  • The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) administered by
  • The Nature Conservancy (TNC)

And it has been kept active by the support of our partners:
